A modeling reference tool is gone.....

I got a rude awaking today, one of my favorite websites is no more, read below. This a quite a disappointment.

www.steaminthewoods.com

This site has been removed.

Thank you to those that have visited, and used the site as intended and within the rules and requirements requested.

However, of late there has once again been obvious and blatant misuse and theft of the images; ranging from use of the images to sell Ebay items such as logging models, to egregious & downright theft of the images being clipped from the site, burned onto film, and then sold as “negatives” (which is a misnomer, as they were actually “film positives”) on Ebay.

Do not contact me for specific images or information, as these are no longer being made available in any manner.

There are ways to prevent hotlinking images from web sites, or even better you set it up so that if someone DOES try to link one of your images they get a nasty message informing them of their failed attempt at theft.

I don;t have my site set up that way, all the pictures ar eones I’ve taken so I really don’t care, but you can bet if I put up some images I paid money for they’d be protected.

while I appreciate that the site owner felt like his work was being exploited I would think that

  1. he didn’t take the original photos (assuming the photos are like, old) and therefore did not hold any legitimate copyright on them.

  2. as most people know, you put something on the internet, it’s pretty much ‘out there’

  3. and finally, he sounds like a whiner.

No matter whether he took the original, inheirited, purchased, or had them dropped on his head from aliens, the fact is he had specific rules in order to view the website. This person took the time to set up the page and the multitude of pics for people to enjoy , not plunder. I’m sure many of the pictures were submitted to him from others with the general idea that they would not be distributed. What you have stated just empowers and rewards theft. I have visited that site several times and I do not blame him for his actions. It’s a shame , he had some great pictures on there.

But they can be easily downloaded and used for any purpose after that.

When someone goes through all that trouble to put the site up the least we as a community could do is make it known that we do not condone what could amount to a type of piracy. Many of those photos were still privately owned not public domain.

I believe Walthers has something like this. I tried posting an image from the Walthers web site for a thread here a few months ago and the image would not post. In place of the picture was a note stating that referenced pictures from their site was either not allowed or not possible.

As a moderator on three forums its a job trying to keep up with the illegal posting of copyrighted photos in replies or photo fun topics…There is no excuse to post a copyrighted photo.

IF you want to use or make a hard copy of a photo its always best to ask permission from the owner.I have done this several times over the last 7 years and never been turn down. The last gentleman I ask not only give me permission to make hard copies for my personal use,he also sent me several additional photos at no charge…
