It was an enjoyable day today here in Iowa- Carl and his wife Pat spent the night here and accompanied us to church, after which we took a whirlwind tour of the Cedar Rapids rail scene. Here’s a couple of shots that I got southeast of town near Bertram-
While that eastbound was passing by, a westbound came through on the near track, but I was “asleep at the switch” and didn’t get a shot of that.[banghead]
Nice photos. Glad you had a good time with Carl and Pat. Saturday was also very nice with them here in Nebraska. It’s amazing how many good friends I’ve been able to make here on the forums.
Reminds me of the time I was railfanning in the middle of summer with the AC on in my truck reading a book. I just happen to look up and there goes a CP locomotive with a trailing CSX SD50.
Isn’t it ironic–the pictures don’t show up on my screen! Probably just as well, if there were any subjects other than the train in them.
Brian saw that second train before I did, but at the speeds they were traveling, it would have been quite an accomplishment to turn around and get it, given the track curvature and the time he had.
Saw a few trains on the way home from CR (never caught the eastbound we saw at Bertram); were actually home before 6:00 last night. Tonight we’re going out for pizza/Italian at the place in Elmhurst, with Pat’s brother and his wife.
For you folks who haven’t experienced it, Brian’s cooking could put the Diner out of business! Never saw such beautifully-grilled pork chops before!
I’m still catching up here; I hope to make more mention of our trip tonight or tomorrow.
No such luck–would have been nice, but we didn’t see anything until we got into Clinton, where an eastbound coal train was passing through the yard. We beat it to the bridge, where we met a stacker crossing the trusses east of the drawbridge.
I’ll bet Quentin will see them all right now–I do!
That train, comprised mostly of NS “Top Gons” (rebuilt from hoppers) usually winds up somewhere in Ohio, though I’ve forgotten where. The CR coal gons in the train were also rebuilt from hoppers, many with PRR origins.
