A puzzle

Under what circumstances would one put a fat man in a boxcar, but carry a pumpkin in a silver-plated Pullman?

When, the fat man wants to eat the pumpkin and the pumpkin is to be used in a pie.

Ralph

Sorry, Ralph, no cigar.

When the boxcar(Bockscar) and Silver Plated “Pullmans” are B-29’s, A Fat Man and a Pumpkin are bombs.

Rob nailed it–congratulations!

“Bockscar” was the B-29, borrowed from its usual commander, Capt. Frederick Bock. and piloted by Major Chuck Sweeney, that dropped the “Fat Man” plutonium bomb on Nagasaki. A number of B-29s were specially modified in the “Silver Plated Project” to carry atomic bombs. The practice plutonium bombs, either dummies, or filled with conventional explosives if dropped on Japan, were called “pumpkins”. The “Pullman” was the first of these modified “Silverplate” airplanes.

Nice one! Give that “Little Boy” a “Lithium Flower”! [(-D]

Here are a few “Riddler” riddles from the 66 Batman series:

When is a clock like a train?

What weighs six ounces, sits in a tree and is very dangerous?

What is yellow and writes?

Becky

I’ll answer the first one: 1:58.

But the rest are off-topic…

Northwoods Flyer

Fun usually is off topic! [(-D] At least as far as the average life goes! [(-D]

#1 Correct! 1:58. Or, more prescisely, two to two! Toot Toot Toot! [(-D]

#2 Correct! A sparrow with a machine gun is always worth watching! [(-D]

Let me take a guess at #3. A Bic banana?

Did these really come from the old Batman show?

Northwoods Flyer

I think Northwoods Flyer is close. If I remember correctly it was a ballpoint banana.

As Robin would say: "Gosh Batman! How could we have missed that?!

Karl

Ding ding ding ding! [(-D]

Yep, they really are from the show and the 1967 movie! They would often come in pairs to reveal “clues” concerning the Riddler’s next move or next target. Here are 2 examples, the ones I remember best, both from the movie and both written in the sky by Polaris missiles launched from The Penguin’s pre-atomic model war surplus submarine. [(-D]

  1. Q: What people are always in a hurry? A: Russians
  2. Q: What is yellow and writes? A: A ballpoint banana.
  3. True answer: Sombody Russian is going to slip on a banana peel and break their neck! [(-D]

Example 2:

  1. Q: What does a turkey do when he flies upsidedown? A: He gobbles up.
  2. Q: What weighs six ounces, sits in a tree and is very dangerous? A: A sparrow with a machine gun.
  3. True answer: What kind of creature would gobble up a bird in a tree? A cat! Which tells Batman that Catwoman is also involved. [(-D]

Anyhoo, the one that involved a train was a natural. The other 2 came to mind because of the atomic theme of the thread.

Anybody care to guess what a “Lithium Flower” is?
