I recently built two of the Walther’s Cornerstone buildings. One is the Greatland Sugar Refinery and the other is the Front Street Warehouse kit. Both have black plastic roofs that have ridges running the length of the building, each about 5/16" apart. I’m not sure whether these roofs are supposed to represent metal or whether they are supposed to be some sort of horizontal tar paper or “shingle”. Walthers modeled them out of black plastic so I was inclined to paint them black.
On some of the other kits they sell, the ridges run from the peak of the roof down towards the gutters and these obviously look like metal roofs, so I’ve painted them accordingly.
On these two new structures, I’d like some help. Are the horizontal strips meant to be metal? Again, they look like overlapping tar paper but I’m not sure.
I say that it the lines are running perpindictular (SP) to the slope that it is a lap in rolled roofing. I have never seen any metal roofing that was laid across the roof because of the capalliary action of the water. It would have to have a very good lap or it would leak. So it’s going to be either black or silver.

You said that if the lines are running perpendicular to the slope of the roof that it must be “rolled roofing”. On both my buildings, the lines are perpendicular to the slope. My question is What is rolled roofing? Are you saying rolled metal and therefore I should paint it silver?
Rolled roofing is the same compisition as “shingle” roofing its just that it is 36" wide and about 30’ long and it is black or silver. I was at Lowes yesterday and saw some in green. If their’s a Lowes or lumber store in your area they would be more then happy to show you how it is applied and show you the colors. In the industry it’s called rolled roofing so call it by that name.
I just went into the train room and looked at all of the roofs that are on Walthers buildings. The metal roofs have lines all the way from the top to the bottom running parallel to the slope and spaced at 26". They have cross lines at 15’6" spacing which would be right for a piece of metal 16’ long.

Roll roofing is available in a variety of colors. I have seen it in black, brown, grey, tan,
green, ceder and white. If you have a roofing supply dealer in your area, stop in for a
quick look. They will provide you with samples so you can decide which color is best.
