A question about the MR "complete" DVD

I am certain to buy this, but have not gotten around to it yet. I need to buy an external memory for my laptop first!

But a question – over the years MR has had to publish corrections or modifcations of articles and scale drawings. I remember a Soo Line caboose drawing where somehow the windows were done wrong. And electric circuits, which were very common articles in Linn Westcott’s tenure, often had corrections published in subsequent articles.

Are the DVDs straight scans or are their notations of some sort where to find the correction? In other words did they scan a version that had corrections and references inked in? My own hard copies usually have a notation when a correction was published later and I assume MR has reference copies that do the same.

And since the DVD is read-only I assume there is no opportunity to insert comments notes or references of our own.

Hi, Dave,

The issues on the DVD are exact reproductions of the print magazines. The older issues are scans; the last decade or so are reproduced from electronic originals. So no, there isn’t a way to do a dynamic link to corrections published later.

The disc is read-only, so there is no system for annotations. However, you can mark issues or articles as “Favorites” for faster reference later.

Hope that answers your questions. Happy railroading!

Just a thought for future versions of the software:

It doesn’t seem like it would be difficult to provide the ability to overlay notes and highlight text without allowing the ability to actually alter the original text. I know my wife’s Nook Color can do that.
