a quick painting ? for you fast track builders

again I have some turnouts under constuction (desk built ) and was wondering is it OK to pre-paint the quick- sticks ties BEFORE pilobonding (gluing) the trackwork to the quick-sticks ? well this(paint) interfear with bond ? …Jerry PS I HAVE posted this question to fast tracks and am wanting other input

If water-based, almost certainly. If something else that leaves a semi-removable surface layer, almost certainly not. Thinned oils should be fine. Goopy latexes with rubber that amounts to deck non-skid-type coating may work, but I wouldn’t bet on it.

Most build the turnouts and then air-brush them, or paint them by hand.

thanks Crandell:; that pretty much matches the response I received from fast-tracks. its just that I bought a couple from the auction site guy and it looks to ME he painted or stained his quick sticks prior to gluing BUT I sure dont want to take a risk on mine delaminateing from using the wrong stuff.[B)]…Jerry

Jerry-

I’ve been building FT components for several years. Paint the turnouts after completion. Paint prior to assembly will only create problems with rail bonding to the balsa ties.

Jerry,

Truthfully, the wood ties are only cosmetic. As long as the PC ties are securely anchored to the roadbed, there is nowhere for the wood ties to go even if they do break loose from the rails. I install my track with latex caulk so every tie is cemented to the roadbed, not just the PC ties. Further keep in mind that the ballast would keep any ties that have separated from the rails and/or roadbed caulking in the desired position as well. Yes, it could be a pain if your wood ties fall off before you can install your turnout on your layout but I have found that isn’t much of a problem with reasonable handling.

good stuff [;)] thanks ,Jerry
