A quick Q on the NCE power cab

While looking through my owners manual the other day i noticed that it says the far right hand side LED should be any color but red or green and should show yellow(its a bycolor LED) Well mine has always been red and everything functions as it should and has been like this for the last 18 months!

I know, i should have checked this out like 18 months ago[:-^] but its never been a problem.

I was wondering what color others’ NCE power pro far right hand LED labelled ‘track’ shows whilst the system is on???

Mine shows yellow and always has. You may have a short circuit somewhere in your wiring that is not causing enough of a load to trip the circuit breaker, but enough to cause the LED to indicate a short condition; or there may be something wrong with your Command Station.

Assuming that you have a 5 Amp system, the first thing I would check is the data cable between the Command Station and Power Booster to insure that you have both ends properly connected to the “Control Bus” sockets as shown in the inside front cover diagram, and that your power supply is of the proper rating.

If this doesn’t solve the problem, I suggest you contact NCE with your question.

I know this sounds too obvious, and I hope you don’t take it the wrong way, but are you absolutely sure you’re not red/yellow color blind? We have a couple of club members who have some very strange types of color blindness, especially to LEDs. They can both pass a driver’s license exam and military physicals, and can even distinguish between electronics color codes on wires and resistors, but have trouble distinguishing between LED colors.

Most bi-color red/green LEDs tend to look a lot more red than orange when operated by equal-magnitude AC current. Simply because the typical red LED is brighter at a given current level than the typical green LED. There’s only one resistor between that bi-color LED and the track power, so with equal current flowing to the red and green halves, the red half dominates. The PowerCab can;t do it, but on systems that support running a DC loco using address 00, in one direction the LED gets more red, and int he other more green. It never gets all green, even with the lion’s share of the time spent with current flwing int he direction to operate the green half, the red still overpowers it. It’s kind of greenish-orange in that direction, and in the opposite direction, so red that you can’t even tellt he green is on (but it is, slightly).

So don’t worry about it, it’s just the nature of the beast. If you squint or blink your eyes quickly you will be able to see that indeed, tere IS some green mixed in with the red.

Gary,

You have Power Cab in the title but Power Pro in the post. I’m assuming that you are talking about the Power Pro because:

  1. The Power Cab doesn’t have a bi- or tri-color LED, and

  2. The Power Cab hasn’t even been out a year yet (Feb 2006)

You may want to correct it just so it isn’t confusing for others…

Good point Tom, it is indeed the Power Pro 5 amp.

Randy’s post sounds very feasable to me, i like that[:)]! As ive said, its never caused a problem and even shows red when track power is disconected.

Cacole, i wouldnt take it the wrong way, i appreciate the response!

Ive sent NCE a mail now but i dont think i’l loose much sleep over it tbh.

Thanks guys.
