A Rare Sight

Friday was my lucky day for railfanning. I caught Union Pacific 844 a Northern 4-8-4 running east bound on Oregons UP main line out of Baker City, Or. A rare NW run. She was pulling 3 coaches and a ac4400. It was a great site to see.[8D][swg][:D]

I was wondering if anyone else saw her. It looked like she was headed towards Salt Lake City, UT.

The AC4400 may have been on as extra power for further down the line or could simply be being delivered to another area. IIRC, 844 is equipped with an MU station.

The AC4400 is there for dynamic brakes.

Works for me.

It is headed home to Cheyenne.

You betcha - a rare sight. UP844 and SP4449 were a part of a Special run from Cheyenne to Portland to Tacoma, WA on May 10, 11th and 12th. After five days on static display in the Fife Yard, two REALLY special excursion trips were made on Friday and Saturday May 18/19th from Tacoma up north to Everett, WA and back. Then on May 22nd both locomotives started the return trip home.

You can see great photos, comments and a video of the return through Olympia, WA at the OMRS web site: www.omrs-wa.org . Watch out for the video…17 megs of steam heaven that we could not get compressed any further. Be patient, the download is worth it!
