A rolling fiddle yard.

If I’m not mistaken, this is an English model RR invention. Being in the process of building a linear track plan a few sections at a time, I found my self in need of a destination and a temporary yard for my trains on each end of the layout. Ideally, I wanted to have a yard on one side and a final destination on the other. With room lacking, the fiddle yard concept came to mind. I figured a mobile fiddle yard could be used for each end of the layout. It would provide a yard and destination as the railroad grows.

I took a Woodland Scenics module, added casters and temporary track. Now I can run trains off each end of the layout-in-progress and use it as my mobile fiddle yard! As the railroad grows longer, it’ll still be in use.

All the track on the fiddle yard is temporary and the Styrofoam is held in place with pins. Coincidently, the pins make great hitching posts for the cars while I’m rolling the fiddle yard to the other end of the layout.

Excellent idea, and nice execution.

Nothing keeps interest alive like being able to run trains, and a movable fiddle yard makes a good destination. It might also serve as ‘rest of the world’ staging later in the building cycle.
