I came across this video of the Battenkill RR, (NY/Vermont), I though would be interesting for those of you interested in short lines. The RS-3, painted in the G & J (Greenwich & Johnsonville) is the original scheme it was painted for when it was assigned to the Greenwich & Johnsonville, (now the Battenkill shortline) by the D&H. I believe this is the longest continually running loco in the US. (the UP Challenger has been on the UP’s roster longer but not continually active). Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.
Do they not require mufflers in your area? It was a nice video, but that RS unit sounded like the African Queen.
I guess you’ve never been up close to an old ALCo, all the RS’s I’ve ever seen sound like that, although most throw a lot more smoke.
Neat video! I’d like to see a sound decoder make THOSE noises!
Wasn’t the African Queen steam powered? At any rate, it was not very loud.[%-)]
is that the sound that Alco’s are notorious for making?
Loved it, Jay. Hey, folks, remember, that engine’s like 50 or 60 something yrs. old.
Remember the sayings…
-
Alcos sound like Harley Davidsons on steroids!
-
If an Alco doesn’t belch out black smoke…something’s wrong with it! [:-,]
I believe it was built for the D&H in 1948 and has been in regular service ever since.
That’s it, although the video doesn’t actually do it justice, (not much bass in the video), if you’re within 100ft you can feel it in your chest.
Even though it was of poor quality, it still sounded like a sweet symphony to me. It makes me want to go and find a railroad still running Alco’s just so I can experience it.
