I’ve been working on a project for my University studies, a model of the Maria-Church in Helsingborg, Sweden. It’s a 1:50 scale model and it’s BIG! It’s a fun experience comparing true to scale models with the rather small compressed models we usually make for our layouts… I will not be at the Uni workshop for some time though, so I can’t show pics of the large model, but I have made a version in HO today… It’s fun to see how it looks compared to the HO buildings i have… I can use it at Uni later, so it’s no loss of labor… I mentioned that it’s big in 1:50 scale, but it’s big in HO as well! It measures in at 24’ x 10’ in HO scale… Here are some pics.
Did I mention that the 1:50 scale version is big?
Gee, I see that and it seems to me that the 1:50 model is BIG. I am sure it is BIG.
Looks like you are off to a great start. It wil be interesting to see when you get it finished!
I’ll bet 1:50 Is BIG.
Can you find peoples that size to populate the pews? And to sermonate to the peoples?
Did I mention it looks BIG to me?

1:50 is a standard architect scale, so no problem with figures there! I have the Preiser priest in HO in my collections, so I guess I will dig him up…
Lookin’ good![Y] Do you have enough space on your layout for that structure?
I guess I could… But as I don’t model Swedish RR’s or intend to finish it to my usual finish. I will probably only use it as a exercise and an inspiration… A cool result of this is that I have redesigned my new layout and gone for the less is more concept… I will have fewer, but bigger buildings. Now I will have to check the HABS/HAER site for building plans suitable for my Connecticut proto/freelanced layout…
Nicely-done model. [tup]
I’m guessing that the size, in HO, is 24**“x10”**.
1:50 is only slightly smaller than O scale, so you’d also have that option for details and, possibly, figures.

Wow, I’m impressed, Graffen. I would like to see it when/if it ever gets completed. It looks remarkable already.

Thanks all! It is a 13:th century Gothic Pseudo-basilika It lacks the celestory windows in the Nave, that’s why it’s not a “real” Basilika. I have “finished” the Church now.
I think it came out rather nice.

Hallelujah!
I forgot to mention the lack of roofs and ribs, but I think I will add them later… The interior will get some more attention as well. The point of this model is to show how different the interior can look in another color. The Church is raw bricks inside today after some genius decided to remove the medieval lime plastering back in 1890… This will show how much more bright the otherwise rather gloomy interior will be. I have also made the Altar area removeable so a new design can be shown…
I have made some progress on the church. The pews and crucifix are in place, along with the baptismal font and some visitors… [:D]
I had a chance to compare a selectively compressed church with my true to scale model… It looks almost silly… The small church is sold as HO, but some measurements tell me that it is probably more close to N scale… But even if it had been made twice the size, it would still be too small! A comparison with a similar medieval church tells me that it would have to be 2/3:s of the length of my big model to be closer to scale… [:D]
