A unique steam fantrip

CB&Q M-4 2-10-4 6315 still under steam, but never to run again. On the Q, these engines were called the Colorado types even though they worked haling coal in southern Illinois.

Only once did the CB&Q offer a steam fantrip with two big engines – one was a 2-10-4, Number 6315. Unfortunately, there was trouble along the way to Galesburg.

My First Fan-trip, Not one but two big steamers

Very nicely done, Glen. Your story was both well written and beautifully illustrated. It would be nice to see it printed in a future issue of Classic Trains.

Thanks for the great article and photos. I think the Burlington had some of the nicest looking steamers ever. The 6300s were beautiful locos. It’s a shame the day turned sour for the 6315 and the fans but at least she did have her moment in the sun! I have heard the recordings of the trip and she sounded as fine as she looked. I think the real tragedy was having the 5632 scrapped rather than preserved.
