A Visit to the Penn Lake Ry Paint Shop

The Penn Lake Railway’s shop forces have worked hard over the last few months.

First, they out shopped several locomotives and cabooses.

This RS3 started life as an Atlas Delaware-Lackawanna unit. I stripped off the D-L lettering and replaced it with Penn Lake.

Wanting something different for the switchers…I took an undec Atlas S2, and painted it John Deere green. Most of the striping and lettering came from a D&H decal set, and some custom Penn Lake lettering.

PL’s cabooses also got a coat of John Deere green, except with white lettering.

The Shop didn’t forget revenue cars either.

100 ton, 3 bay, coal hopper: Data only Bowser kit.

70 ton, 3 bay, ore service hopper: Undec MDC/Roundhouse kit.

70 ton, offset side, 3 bay, rock service hopper: Undec Accurail kit.

70 ton, 2 bay, covered hopper: Erie Lackawanna Bowser kit, factory road painted out.

50 foot, mill gondola: Undec, MDC/Roundhouse kit.

They all look great, except they look too clean.[:-^]

That first RS-3, if all you did was change the lettering, then it was a D&H unit originally, not Delaware Lacawanna.

Maybe ORIGINALLY, way back. But that’s exactly how it looks on the Delaware-Lackawanna today.

I had forgotten that the DL had preserved a couple of the D&H RS-3s and I wasn’t aware that Atlas had done them as DL units.

Nice pics [:)]

Does my eagle eye spot a Baldwin lurking in the background?

Jay…yup Atlas did a run with all three road numbers. They disappeared pretty quick. I wish I could fine a couple more…but alas I have an undec or two and some D&H decals floating around instead.

Dave…yes there is a Baldwin beast in the background.
