A wee bit of information please

Hi everyone

I need a wee bit of information and I am sure i will not be let down.

My question is…Last year whilst touring in the USA we were travelling to Page Az. and for a long while the road ran alongside an electrified Railroad which seemed to come to an end in Page. What was the name of this railroad and what does it carry? It looked like coal or ore or cement, I can’t remember (probably none of those).

And if possible does anyone have any photos they could post of the above mentioned Railroad.

Thanks everyone in anticipation[tup]

I think you are refering to the Black Mesa & Lake Powell RR. It runs from a coal mine to a power plant near Page. I looked it up and I don’t belive it interchanges with any other rail roads. You might visit,http://www.trainweb.org/southwestshorts/bmlp.html for more info.

Recently, I saw a television program that referenced problems at the Black Mesa Power Plant. Apparently, an older plant , it has environmental issues with its stack emissions. The operation is owned by the Navajo Tribal Council, and is currently shut down. The discussion was that it was more profitable to sell their Federal environmental credits than repair and upgrade the plant to current standards. Consequently, the electric railroad, a captive of the operation, is also shut down.
Upgrade costs are in the millions and their environmental pollution credits are a item that can be auctioned off for far more value than the plant. So the employees of the plant, primarily tribe members are without the good incomes the power plant and railroad provided for them.

A big “thank you” to everyone who replied so quickly to my question, you people certainly know your railroads.

Thanks once again…I knew you guys wouldn’t let me down.
