A "Where is it?" for Aug 21st. No photos-only clues

If there were still trains in this town, the engines might be orange, or green or blue. Back at the turn of the century there were so many trains, they were literally on top of each other. At one time, this town featured a fly-over above a fly-over, so that all three local roads could occupy the same realestate. Where is it?

Is this in the Midwest, and not in, say, Virginia ?

Not Virginia and not the midwest (at least not how I define the midwest, which ends at the 100th parallel), but the location quite appropriately rhymes with “greed.”

Yes-midwest. Upper midwest, if you prefer.

Midwest! That’s where it rains, makes you miserable with humidity, and you can grow corn almost just by planting it and stepping back.

So there are no longer any railroads serving this town?

Sounds like the “today” railroads would have been Milwaukee Road, BNSF and MRL, that would make this somewhere between MN and MT.

Milwaukee isn’t a “today” railroad, and though it got close to this location, none of the railroads in this three-level crossing was Milwaukee or a Milwaukee predecessor. MRL isn’t the only good-sized railroad with blue locomotives, you know.

I thought the colors meant BNSF, BN and ATSF. Is Iron ore involved ?

Yes-railroad went out I think in th early 80’s

Look back carefully at Murphy’s original post. Today means today. ATSF and BN are not today. Who is blue today?

Not iron ore, but ore, most definitely!

Yes- I know that you know the answer.[;)]

We always have a hard time thinking of places like Ohio being in the midwest.

We still see some of the blue ones though.[:)]

I think I’m going to follow 1435mm’s “lead” and guess Lead, SD.

You are correct! There is a famous photo of the 3-high rail lines in Lead. At the time(1903), I think the 3 roads were a narrow gauge ore hauler, The Fremont&Elkhorn Valley, and a Burlington pedecessor. The ore in question was gold. Footnote: in the early 80’s, I worked at the Rapid City airport in the summer. Everyday, Homestake gold mine would send a shipment of gold to meet an airplane connection. It was simply 2 guys dressed like secret service men, driving a yellow pinto. And everybody knew who they were.

You know… a smart fella like 1435 mm could provide some entertaining and educational “where is it?” threads…[;)]
