What is the correct AAR designation for a covered gondola that is used to carry metals or other material that has to be protected from the weather?

Jarrell,

For covered mill loads (metal) use the GBR designation. This information was supplied by a grumpy old engineer…[:D].

GB = standard mill gondola

  • S if it’s set up for a particular commidity (eg. troughs for handling coil steel)

  • R if it’s covered/removeable roof

So either GBR or GBSR.
