There is a lot to this rule
cars over 40 yrs old fom orginal built date unless specified under rule 88 of the office manual .
cars not listed in umler.
tank cars having wood shims
flat cars with removeable container pedestals .
5 Old air brake set ups .
6 Type d couplers and other outdated draft systems
plus there are wheel and truck components that are outdated .
I hope this helps .
See carknocker’s answer above.
This is, basicly, and safety and common standard rule. When this rule recieved its last general update, there were simply way too many wrecks due to failures of such things as side frames, certain types of axel bearings, draft gear failures, old cars falling apart as the train went rolling along, and so forth. When the types of accidents that tend to be caused by the failures addressed in Rule 90 have occurred, they usually are spectacular.
Ive heard that the FRA rule allows cars 50 years of age to be interchanged, why the difference? Also, under AAR rule 88, when a car is rebuilt, does that allow it to be interchanged for that additional ten years, or does it depend what is worked on the car?
Hey Tom, is that you? Matt from Mankato here. Rule 88 states that cars built on or after July 1, 1974 are limited to 50 years. Anything built prior to that date is limited to 40 years. Rule 88 sets out the criteria for rebuilding and must be adhered to. Once a rebuild is complete the cars interchange life is extended an additional 10 years.
