AAR Type F couplers

Hello all,

I am curious if anybody knows when the upper and lower shelf couplers were first instituted in use on Tank cars and other such equipment. I have found alot of info on them but no definative date on when they began to appear.

Thanks,

Erik

The only information that I could find on the subject was in a 1978 Raildates chart, from RMC. It states that, effective August 1, 1933, new cars must have Type E or Type F couplers, and effective August 1, 1937, all rebuilt cars must have Type E or Type F couplers. In 1968, Type D couplers were outlawed in interchange service. The final notation mentions that all jumbo tank cars must be fitted with shelf-type couplers by December 31, 1978.

Good info, thanks Wayne.
