Abbreviated Autorack - UPDATE ....

Well, I got one of my autoracks shortened up. Proportionately, I think it still looks pretty good, and it looks better on my less-than-ideal curves. Overall length of the rack is now 73-1/2 feet.

Wadda ya think ??? …

Back to the workbench, got a bunch more to cut down …

That turned out great! Did you blow off putting those pain in the butt latches on the ends?

GD JB. I CNT TL THT THE AUTORK IS ABBRVTD.

Well, I think you are yanking our legs. Your not cutting down a model, I call horse feathers.

But I do want to know where in the world did you get that prototype picture showing a shortened auto rack?

All kidding aside, that looks fantastic. Great idea to shorten it up a bit. Sure looks like it was a bit of work.

Actually it wasn’t much of a job at all !!! I simply removed 2-1/4 inches right out of the middle of each deck and assembled as per norm.

At one time I cut down a couple of intermodal well cars so they would look better on 18" radius curves, and they did. But they were nothing compared to how good your car looks. And as a side note, I see you are a loyal Wal-Mart Shopper.

… You have no idea how many Walmarts it took to get enough cars to do eight autoracks !!! [:O]

Did you really have to do that? On my old HO layout, the well cars were the only modern cars (aside from boxcars, etc) that looked okay on 18" curves.

Did you also cut the 40’ containers down to 30’? :open_mouth:

I’ve done this as well (no pun), but I did it to the single 48’ well cars. I cut them down so a 40’ container just fit in the well with either another 40’ or 48’ on top. Doesn’t sound like much, but it DID look and operate better on MY layout.

Did you get funny looks from the checkout girls? They always look at me pretty weird when I buy a bunch of that stuff. I’ve got a guy down the road from me that has one of those Pintos that he still drives. Little round window and all.
