About the "General" category

Hi there. Overall, I am very happy with the technical performance of the forum. Thank you!

As for the structure, I am wondering about the value of having an overall “General” section. It appears that many folks place queries and threads there that really should be under another section (MR, Garden, classic trains or trains). I think that these may get lost as many folks only have an interest in one of the scale/gauges, and don’t look at the General section that much. On my computer, my link goes directly to the MR section, as I primarily model HO.

I’d be curious to know 1) how people navigate the forum and how many actually look at the General category and 2) what is the exact purpose of the General category. I suspect that very few messages would get here if people knew exactly what the purpose is.

I suggested in another thread that a separate forum news and announcement category should be created where only admins and moderators can post (but anyone can reply).

I think the General category posts should be moved to the most related category and then General removed.

I browse the forum almost exclusively on mobile, so I don’t pay much attention to any of the forum categories (though when I’ve created a new thread I try to pay attention to where I’m posting). In my view all the threads are just sorted in a list with newest posts firsts, regardless of category.

Is it possible to change the category once a topic has been started? If so, who can change it?

(I couldn’t find the “Improve the forum” thread.)
