I purchased one of these models at the National Summer Steam-up in Sacramento this past July. It ran great straight out of the “Mummified” packaging after some light oiling. My model is of No. 8 and has a much better number plate on the front of the smoke box. I have run it a number of times now and had no real problems other than those mentioned above. The tender water tank is not the full tender body so it’s very easy to over fill it and get water all leaking out of the tender body joints. The point you make about the cab roof is very true as I had this problem of a clearance issue resulting in a minor derailment due to running with the cab roof open. The 4’ radius minimum (8" diameter) only applies to very low speeds as it it very easy to derail the engine on this tight radius. Overall I am very happy with this engine and it looks great pulling Bachmann Big Hauler “Pullman” passenger cars.
Very interesting, looks great!
