Activity on the DW&P

Does anyone have any idea on how many trains per day operate over CN’s DW&P between Fort Frances and Duluth? The reason I ask is I’m thinking of heading up to the Ash Lake/Orr area sometime in the early fall.

Well in the motel we stayed in that was 50’ from the tracks, it seemed like they barrelled thru about every fifteen minutes all night!! Really, at that time a few years ago it was maybe one every couple of hours. KIM that the line is ‘split’ now, trains going one direction use the DWP, trains going the other way use the DMIR.

I think the average is about 15 trains a day north of Virginia-south of there is where the line is split between DWP and DMIR, but you also gain the ore trains.

There are some very scenic areas between Ash Lake and Orr. When I lived up there a few years ago one thing I noticed was that is was common for trains to be fleeted-multiple trains in one direction at a time.

Sounds like a plan to me - thanks for the info. I’ll wait until after Labor Day when the weather cools a bit and the kids are in school (better chance to enjoy some solitude while I’m up there).
