well, i just wanted to start off by say thanks for all the replies and help i have received on this forum ( thanks again). And ,now to go with the subject i didnt realize how addictive this this truely is.( lmao). I have probably spend about 4 to 5 hundred dollars in the last month or so ,on wood, engines, trees, houses etc.
Wow, am sittnig here looking at everything and thinking to myself 9 tee hee) i have crated a monster.I was going to start this off slow ; with a train set (store bought) and go from there, opps, i got three loco’s on the way in the mail ,and am drooling on others that i want.
Hey thanks for being there to suppost this great hobby and the little people like we who are starting to get into this and loosing our minds to it

$400 or $500 a month? Some would say that is slow![(-D][(-D]
Actually, if you already have roadbed and track in this mix, you might find your costs go down some during construction. I have found that the more time I spend cutting, slicing, gluing, turning screws, wiring, fuming at myself and redesigning things, the less I spend.
Working on it for an evening and seeing something appear that wasn’t there at the start of the session is time well spent.
you hit the nail on the head Adelie .And your probably right on the cost. but like you said i have changed the basic color on my layout twice now, still havent found the right tone but ,i am still working on it ,and like you mentioned ; when i work on it all day i can see the results, the errors and, even the wants that i would like. True so true .
Thanks for your post

I found the same thing with costs. Front-end, it was scary, but once I began to cut, hammer, screw, and sweat, the dollar bleeding slowed to a trickle. Then, once I considered it realy to run trains, and after I had been doing that for a while, the drooling started with the magazines.
I’m happy to say that She has been highly generous and indulgent, but I have spent my last loco bucks for quite some time. We caught her up with Christmas presents, so the bank is kinda low…for now.
I am happy to read of your excitement, but that you are also very much aware of your circumstances…rooted in reality. Good for you!

Addictive it is. I’m done with the major construction and now spend 50 to 100 a month. Scenery, structures, detail stuff, maybe a car or two.

Yes, and danger there is in this, too, Grasshopper. It is very tempting to buy lots of things “for later,” but when “later” comes along, you’ve changed plans and there is no place for things you’ve already bought. Right now, I could populate a layout twice the size of the one I’ve got with buildings, locomotives and rolling stock, and still I hang around on eBay looking for more.
It is time to concentrate on the mundane - roadbed, flex-track and glue. Once the trains are running, then you can decide what additional engines and cars you need, and which bare spots need what structures.
Everyone thanks fro your post’s. I just think that this is great and that i needed
to let everyone know who replies t omy post’s that i respect there feedback.Sometime selector tho to let you in on a secret, i (like MisterBeasley )
Have been going a little over board and have just today found my error in my ways. Dont get me wrong i buy what i need so far but find myself on ebay alot looking ( putting things on watch) and just trying to get too much too quick.
For instance today i got houses off ebay ( they finally came in) and am already wanting more cause i feel there isnt enough LOL.
a tangle web we weave i guess?
Hey thanks all for your posts again and your support
Chris
Its fun buying new stuff for any hobby. I’ve got myself under control now, I was at a show last weekend and only bought a few auto’s and a Atlas tank car that was missing a plug that holds the truck on for 5 bucks. I was about 500 a month for the first 6 months or so I was in the hobby.
As a kid you almost have to have a career lined up in order to pay for all of your toys when you grow up. MRing is kind of like a breakout of zits, it keeps spreading getting bigger and bigger, you step back one day and take a look and it’s out of control. But unlike zits, you keep feeding it and it continues to grow.[:D]
true so true hazmat, (lmao) this is great tho i actualyl enjoy it .well , untill i have to go out to the garage now [V] then it’s cold. I live in south texas it doesnt get cold that often around here so unlike most everyone used to it up north 20’s , 30’s ,40’s are cold [:(]. but ,all is good , trying to figure out how i can get my layout in the house and get it past the big boss lady? lol .then i will really have more time for my choo choo [:D]
Yeah, that’s how my layout started ~ a train set for Christmas. Then it took over a 12’ x 10 ’ section of the basement at my father-in-law’s house. Now, it’s in a 12’ x 27’ area in our own basement. Now, that I’m on the scenery phase, the ‘bloodletting’ has slowed. But in the next month comes the upper level, wiring, put together some of the buildings that my wife got me for Christmas last year. It is nice to look at with an actual train on the tracks with semi-finished scenery, though.
give it thirty years in the hobby and see really how addictive it can get…i’ve done things in this hobby I thought i could never pull off before…my big thing now is train detection circuits and automatically operated systems…my entire family thinks i’ve gone ballistic with the hobby …but like they say: …“what ever makes you happy”…chuck[:D]
This hobby is endlessly addictive! And its fun! Yippee! 400-500 is quite a bit, but the up-front costs are tremendous and then they taper off. Glad you are enjoying yourself. What various locomotives have you already purchased and what are you drooling on?
Whoo hooo, thirty uears ,wow i can just imagine some of the things you have done ; That is awesome!!. yeah, my wife has told me i have to start getting a grip on it [:)] .I have gotten into such a habit that if i am not working on my layout i am hangin out in the forums here or drooling on ebay ( i think my watch list must have about 30 -30 thing i am watching.[:D] all is good thought i am in a situation now. When i first started this my wife told me to do it in the garage( there was no room in the house but, now after my little bit of complaining she tells me i can put it in the house after i have already built the bench and started everything[xx(] so, hum what to do ? take everythnig apart and put it in the house or just leave it where it is at? any suggestions?
THanks for the posr guys it’s great to hear i’m not the only one
chris
I’d take the house. Its an oppurtunity too good to pass up. The inner comforts including temperature control are well worth it. However, how difficult will it be to take apart? The next layout you build you may want to make modular and in small pieces so that you could easily assemble and disassemble.
Best of luck.
[:(][:(] man railroadyoshi she already chsnged her mind.women !~[V] oh ,well, i know my next one and she knows it also, it is going to be inside and that is that! oh, well, i guess it has to stay in the cold garage for now lol. pretty bad even got to the point of thinking about bunking the kids in one room[;)] but, i couldnt do that . The thought was nice to have a room all to myself and trains maybe next time i can get a house with 4 bedroom and or a basement .that would be awesome . thanks fro the post
