I have a Athern RTR locomotive and the box says that it as a “quick plug for DCC decoder”, QSI makes decoders that can be instaled for a lot locos (now they do, look in your 2009 walthers ho scale refrence book and look in the comand control section and you’ll find it), can some one give me some info on how I could instal a decoder on the loco?
Also look at a Tony’s Train Exchange. They have lots of ideas for decoders.

If the loco has a light board that looks like the Revolution-A, you can use that one, repalcing the light board, and the DCC quick plug doesn;t come into play. If not, it looks like the Revolution-U has a 9-pin JST connector (which is what the “dcc quick plug” is) and thus could plug right in.

What is the exact model? Just saying Athearn RTR covers a lot of ground. The Athearn Genesis I have converted are using the JST plugs (9-pin slot). I don’t know if RTRs have gone that route or not. You mentioned QSI, are you looking for sound decoders?
This question would probably get a better response over in the elctronics and DCC forum. In fact here is a similar thread. http://cs.trains.com/forums/1552874/ShowPost.aspx
Just plug in a 9 pin decoder…there are many available.

The exact model is a cw44, I dont know how many pin it is. I’ll see if I can get the shell off and have a look. Is the QSI decoders 8 or 9 pin socket?[%-)]
-
Remove Dummy Plug
-
Plug in 8/9Pin Decoder
-
Put Shell on Locomotive
-
Hit Dummy plug repeatedly with a hammer, or substitute the hammer with ones head
-
Fry dummy plug, in sauce pan, with salt, olive oil, and peanut oil. Cook on high heat for 15 to 18 minutes.
-
Eat dummy plug, I swear it tastes like Gummy Bears. If its too hard, put in oven for 20 minutes, then try again. Warning, molten plastic may cause burns.
-
Drop Locomotive into Lake, it will give it a natural weathering.
-
Remove Locomotive from lake 3 years later.
-
Test locomotive on test track. Smoke is good, its realistic
-
Send locomotive to Athearn and demand a replacement.
-
Repeat process!
and im the guy that over hered yelling out the window saying ya drunks!!!
You forgot the most important part! You must bake the decoder into the locomotive by preheating your oven to 500*F and baking the locomotive for 4-6 hours. Oven smoking and pungent smell is normal. Allow all fires to burn freely, this helps with the baking process.
