I have a question I’m at the point of adding people and other items like pallets and accents to my layout. All the the figures and material are Woodland Scenics, I purchased their Accent Glue in the contain it looks white and very thick. I was curious if this is the way it supposed to look, also it says that it allows repositioning of figures I curious if this means that if you want to move the figure or item in the past if it will allow you to do this?
Yes, that’s how its supposed to look. Brush some of the glue onto the feet of the figure, then let it set up for a few minutes, then position the figure. You’ll be able to move it around several times before having to apply more glue. You WILL occasionally have figures fall over. Also when you are cleaning your layout (I find the layout needs a deep cleaning about every six months) its kind of a pain because you are probably going to knock a bunch of your figures over in the process.
That’s what the glue is for - follow the instructions, allow the glue to turn clear before mounting the figures. If you want to remove them later, you can. Just rub off the glue on the bottom. If glued to scenery, some bits may come off with the figure, but it shouldn’t be too much. I use the glue to place my figures in my photo scenes so I can remove them when I’m done taking photos. For permanently locating figures, I use thick CA glue.
I frequently use white glue as an “imperfect bond” sometimes for figures, even more for structures. Holds them in place but has a weak enough bond to allow them to be removed without tearing them to bits. For wood structures, I use one or two drops in strategic corners. More might hold it TOO securely. For plastic structures, I use more. The white glue doesn’t really bond well to the plastic, not too hard to break loose…
I can see Woodland Scenics stuff would be better for the quality of placing a figure and having it adhere immediately without having to hold it up from 2 to 5 minutes while glue sets. I have bought some, haven’t used it yet. I am reasonably sure I will use it when posing figures for photos. Not so sure about placing figures where either I won’t ever be able to get to them for re-uprighting, or conversely where I will knock them over fairly easily and often when cleaning…
I prefer to use a pin to mount figures. I use a small drill bit in a pin vise to make a tiny hole in the foot of a miniature. I then take a short length of brass wire (.020 works well) with a bit of super-glue on the end and insert it in the hole. I clip off the wire after the glue has dried, maybe 1/4", and then use the pin as a little spear-point to stick the miniature into the layout. Unless the surface is super durable it will poke right into scenery or wood or even thin plastic, and the miniature won’t budge. If I want to relocate the figure I can just pull it out, typically the hole is so small it doesn’t need to be disguised. I used this method to site miniatures on a static display, they have been sitting untouched for several years and show no signs of falling over.
