Adding Sound to Intermountain F3A

A few years back, I bought an Intermountain C&EI F3AB consist for my Dearborn Station oriented layout. Six roads used the station and all of my Dearborn locos have sound except for the C&EI. Back when I bought it, I added a non-sound decoder, a Digitrax DZ143PS. Recently, I called Intermountain to inquire about sound, and for $85 they sent me a Locksound Select decoder, speaker and baffle. It is essentially a drop-in decoder and speaker. The chassis itself is factory equipped to accept a speaker, so the installation was a breeze.

Here are some photos (forgot to turn on the flash) showing 1-Pre-Installation, 2-Decoder Removed, 3-the DZ143PS decoder, 4-the Loksound decoder, speaker and baffle, 5-Post-Installation, 6-the dummy enclosure removed, and 7-the reassembled loco. I will make a video later today so you can see and hear the loco in operation.

Nice and easy! How does it sound?

Uh oh looky what Rich did. Very nice, I was wondering about that loksound you talked about. Looks like the install went smooth.

But but but… those damned photos! You have a brand new expensive camera, and thats what you come up with? Hahaha! (exept the last photo is good)

Rich,

Nice install! I have the same engine (WP paint thought) and would like to do the same sound conversion. I didn’t know you could get that package from IM so reasonable. I will have to contact them about mine. I really like the LOK sound decoders.

Bob, the installation was problem free, but I have started a separate thread to discuss some problems that I am experiencing with the sound, especially the horn.

Interesting series of events? I may hold off until I see how you resolve your problem(s). It does look like you have a bad decoder or corrupt file. I will follow your other thread in the mean time. Good luck,
