Adhesive and Paint for Engineering Plastic?

I have some Hump Yard Purveyance “Armstrong” levers and would like to glue something to them. I would also like to paint them. This is a shiny engineering plastic. What kind of adhesive would I use and what kind of paint will work without wearing off with handling?

Thanks in Advance

There is a product I’ve used called CPOX which comes with a chemical that will allow it to glue engineering type plastic. As far as paint, I would airbrush on a primer and then your choice of paint.

Chris

Actually it’s called Cypox and another brand is called Cypoxy. Google them. They’re not cheap, I paid $20 for the Cypox kit, it comes with a plastic prep, accelerator, 2 0z bottle of Cypox glue. You can use it as regular CA too. It has an almost indefinite shelf life, I’ve had mine for two years plus at my workbench and it hasn’t thickened and still works just as well as it did when I bought it. And oh yeah, it really works on engineering plastics like Delrin and Celcon, I’ve repaired several Athearn and P2K handrails and they’re still fixed

When it comes to painting engineering plastics, I prime them with Nappa Poly Primer # 7223. It’s made for flexible parts. After primimg, you can use any paint you want. If you’re using Floquil or Scalecoat you can mix some of the primer right in with the paint if you’re airbrushing (about 20% primer, the primer is clear).

ModelMaker51,

Thanks to the tips, that is one I will be looking into seriously. I appreciate the suggestion!

Thanks much

If you’re talking about Delrin, Walthers Goo will bond it.

I’ve heard of people using the paints for the polycarbonate bodies used on radio-controlled race cars on Delrin with some success.

Walthers Goo does not “bond” to engineering plastics, it’s just a contact cement. It may hold for a while, but eventually will dry out and the joint will fail. The Cypox and Cypoxy make a molecular bond that is permanent.

There is paint for polycarbonate bodies (RC cars) that works better on engineering plastics than just using acrylic RR model paints, like Tamiya RC paints and Fascolor, but if you need a certain RR color you’ll have to mix it yourself. With the Napa primer I mentioned, (which is clear), you can use any of the model RR colors with the same effectiveness and similar durabillity.
