Adhesive Question

I have a broken piece that I thought was resin. Tried to repair it with regular super glue, seemed like I got no adhesion at all. Can I try a gel type super glue over the first layer? If I can’t, what might you recommend? How do I determine if it is resin or not?

Resin sometimes has an oily residue on it so that it can be released from the mold. Strong detergent in warm water and scrubbing with a toothbrush is often necessary before painting resin, so I imagine it is also needed for applying cements.

Thanks for the link Dave and activating it tstage.

Since this is an already finished piece, it’s a clean break.

The super glue I used was very thin. I’ll have to check if my Goo is still usable or there may be some Gorilla glue around.

Hello All,

Just a thought, have you tried a styrene compatible glue?

I have a shell that I first tried a styrene compatible glue to repair a broken part. When that failed I then when with CA and it worked.

Sort of backwards of your situation but try the opposite of what you suspect.

If it is Delrin or pp-5 plastic (polyethylene),

regular glue won’t cut the mustard. Try Loctite Plastic Bonding System.

The Activator is the key to prepping the surface, any CA will work after using the Activator.

“Resin” is a kind-of generic term, so resin castings can have different properties.

Cast resin pieces can be soft or hard, flexible or rigid, pliable or brittle, and so on.

Having built many resin kits, I can say that I have had the best results with just regular super glue, any CA works pretty well.

Thank you folks for the additional ideas.

Gorilla glue didn’t seem to stick at all, despite following the directions. (who me?) Put Goo on and it seeems to be holding, still a little flexible, but holding.

I had the Goo on before I saw the suggestion that it might be a “normal” plastic. It doesn’t have a symbol on it and I’m not sure such things would, but if the Goo fails, it’s the next thing to test.

Part of the reason I didn’t think of it being plastic was the hardness of the material.
