Adjusting grade?

I went looking through old posts but didn’t find the answer. Much of the work for the closet turnaround loop is done on my bedroom layout. After I modify the lower yard I gotta redo the grade of the line connecting upper and lower sections. this part of the house was made in the 1850s so the floor, walls etc are not straight. What I think I’m gonna do is buy a swivelling lazer level and mark one height on the wall and on several locations and measure down from there. The lower table of the layout is fairly flat but not perfectly level. Anyone have any simpler ideas tell em to me.

You could use a string line measuring from the floor on both ends. Or a 4’ or 2’ level shimmed on one end.

You need:

  1. String Level
  2. Chaulk Line (use blue chaulk as it comes off easier than the red)

Find your reference point and tack a brad there. Then attach one side of the string level to the brad then go to the other end and pull the string taunt, raise or lower your end till the string level bulb is level (you’ll need a second person for this). Once you have the string level you tack another brad there. Then take the chaulk line and attach one end to the first brad, stretch the chaulk line to the other brad, then snap the line… instant level line.

If you are doing this alone, then your idea is the best option as it leaves both hands free. Ever try to keep a 4’ level steady on an uneven wall? Taint easy!
