[?]I going to Syr NY next week for a family reunion, but would also like a travel on the Adorndack Sceinic Rail Road. Can I get any info on what might I want to do or what day to travel. I am a conductor for the Monticello Railroad Museum in Monticello IL. So I not your average railfan out for the day.
Our first regular Utica trip doesn’t go until July 9 (a Thursday). After that it’s Thursdays and Saturdays until leaf-peeper season.
Nonetheless, if you want to ‘fan’ the Chicago line, Utica Union Station is the place to do it - up close and personal to CSX trains running at or close to track speed. (Please keep a safe distance!) You can also go up to the walkway over the tracks - all glass with a good view of the tracks in both directions.
To take a ride on our Thendara Local, get on NYS 12 North out of Utica and bear right on NYS28 at Alder Creek (look for Old Forge). When you get to Thendara you’ll see the station right next to the highway. From Syracuse, it’ll be about a 2 hour drive.
Trains run Wednesday-Sunday, 1000, 1230, and 1445 (2:45 pm). The Wednesday trips are the train robberies - not the best trip for a rail fan. This time of year I prefer the 1230 and 1445 trips for their scenery along the Moose River. The 1000 trip is spectacular during fall colors.
Hard to say what your motive power will be - we ran with a single F last time I worked. I don’t think either of our road switchers (RS-3 and C424) are in service right now, but one of them might be. If we are running with a road switcher, we do a run-around during the afternoon runs.
But you won’t find out anything if you don’t spell it correctly, like Larry just did. Adirondack is indeed the right spelling, will help you look things up. Always wanted to go there myself.
[bow]I just want to publicly thank Larry & his crew for a very nice day on the RR. Larry & his crew were very professional in their attention to duty & very helpful & friendly to me as their duties allowed.
Then when the day was over we had a very nice dinner & conversation at the old hotel across the street.
