Advice for DCC sound loco

I model the Pennsy in HO and I would like to look at getting a sound equiped loco. I am thinking along the lines of a GP7 or perhaps a GP30 or GP35. What brand have a realistic and accurate sound? Six axle units aren’t out of the question it’s just that I have enough six axle units already.

I have done about a dozen decoder instals on various brands, what are the better sound decoders and what should I avoid? I have thought about trying to install a sound decoder in proto SD9, any thoughts?

When it comes to sound locos, factory or DIY installations any advice is appreciated.

Thank you.

Have you looked at Broadway Limited models? They offer many items for Pennsylvania Railroad as their Paragon2 sound-equipped HO models.

I have certainly noticed the BLI locos available for PRR, I didn’t want to just purchase one and then learn that they have issues, the sound isn’t correct, or avoid this particular model etc etc. That always seems to be my luck, hence my question.

Thanks.

If you intend to purchase a new loco and a sound decoder for it, I suggest you go for the whole package pre-assembled.

In my humble opinion, I don’t believe you can beat BLI sound. Unfortunately they don’t have any 4-axle units in stock right now. They have a nice RS-15 with sound available now.

You might be able to find it on sale from one of the on line vendors.

Good luck on your quest.

Thank you for the link, much appreciated.

BLI sound equipped locos are very nice units.Their big issue is if it’s been out for a while,it’s likely “out of stock” everywhere. You have to jump on them as soon as they come out.

Hi!

I’ve got several sound locos - BLI, Bowser, and P2K. All are really good, although I think I have a soft spot for the BLI units.

Installing sound yourself can certainly be done, but it does involve significant skill and ingenuity and is not - in my opinion of course - for your average MR.

You might want to check out the Bowser Executive line. I have a couple of their F7’s and I love them. Tsunami sound decoders are my preference.
