AF Reverse Loop Question

Is there anyone here who has hooked up a DALLEE #366 TRAK-DTL device? I purchased one recently from Portline Hobbies to use to operate a reverse loop on my “S” gauge layout. The instructions say that the device can be used for a “back and forth” setup, such as what one might do with a trolley operation. Also stated was that it can be used to operate a reverse loop. However, the directions and diagram show only for the back and forth method. I am not an electronic expert; thus, I have difficulty in trying to modify or adapt something for another use.

In one of my vintage 1980’s Greenberg books there is a diagram that shows using a relay to operate an AF reversing loop. That diagram shows insulated tracks at all four connections to the turnout. I’m sure that relay is not as sophisticated as the modern one, but I need to know if all four of those connections to the turnout need to be insulated.

My first try to work the reverse loop was using a Gilbert post-war relay. I had no idea whether it was good or not. But instructions came with it and it was rather simple. Just hook up the seven wires where indicated. It didn’t work, as I expected. So decided to try the modern version. But instructions are not clear (to me, anyway). I e-mailed Doug at Portline asking for help. That was two weeks ago. I know he will respond, but Christmas is coming and my layout is hostage until this is resolved.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Regards to all,

Bill

Alas Bill you have stumbled upon the biggest downfall of two rail american flyer… the dreaded reverse loop. Do you have any copies of S Gaugian? There is a great article about how to use two (1 per loop) AF automatic track switches to control a reverse loop while only insulating the outside rail only(AF switches had a power routing 2 train oper. switch). Use one double-pole, double throw toggle switch was needed per loop w/o center off, this flip the polarity quickly so the E unit would not cycle… Very cool set up and very low budget( and yes! no electronics to burn out!!![yeah])… the AF reverse loop relays have really become expensive, so this alternative is a good idea. I will check to see the month and year the article came out.

I was going through some old paperwork and found the diagram you are talking about. I’m off now but when I go to work on Thursday, I will scan the image and post it for you.
