After The Queensland Flood. Yikes!

Brent

Thanks for sharing! I don’t feel so bad about some of my trackage after all. Hopefully they csn get their rails back in order soon.

To say that they have just a bit of repair work to do is a massive understatement. Wow! They are going to be busy for a while!

I too sympathize with the Aussies. I have seen pics and video of the flooding and it is/was catastrophic. Not only that, but my fathers cousin and his family live in Queensland and we have not heard from them since the flooding. No phone calls, no e-mails, no nothing.

The name of the game here is not one upsmanship but a current situation and past examples of what has happened to other railroads. Sure that is some bent and wiggly trackage in both situations but when it comes to destruction of a rail line, the Johnstown Flood of 1889 comes to mind.

There are not many pics on this site of the destruction, but a few on the rebuilding efforts. Many blamed the PRR for the death and destruction in Johnstown, but also without the PRR how many other lives would have been lost? The engineer of the work train that came racing into Conemaugh ahead of the flood saved many lives as he had tied down his whistle. Without the PRR and the B&O running extras, the recovery effort for the city would have taken years instead of just a few months.

Let’s hope the Aussies get things cleaned up and back on their feet soon.

As i live in the heart of Brisbane i saw these effects first hand. it was a very nervous time for my sister who was on alert to evacuate but was spared from the damage. the massive size of the swollen river and the power of it was amazing. over 40000 homes were water damaged by either partially being submerged or completely. there is now 1300 people homeless and it will be over 2 years to go back to the way we were. this was just in brisbane. 75% of our state has been declare a disaster area

Looks like the Road Trains will take over.

road trains are getting thru in some places food scarce up here in central qld

hey batman… did you get those photos from al roker in australia???

the photos are from the main coal line around blackwater the line to the mine i work at was repaired in approx 10 days

hey dcs077 hope you are ok down there i see on the news today you are getting lots of rain and a king tide tomorrow… hope you home is ok … model trains ok???

i posted a thread the other day saying coal to hit $ 500 cant get the coal off shore

I also note in these pics that the rail must be welded. It looks like continuous strand. Can the rail be straightened after something like this or does it have a permanent flaw? Where I am from in PA most trackage had a joint every so often, but then again that trackage was laid in the early 20th century.

OMG!! That’s crazy!

Sorry about you Aussies having to go through that. Reminds us here of the Katrina disaster. Only that we don’t know how to save our own people, thanks to Bush and his buddies.

Hi Dan…Haven’t chatted with you on another forum and was wondering about you for the past week. Good news about your sister and wish you and your extended family a speedy return to normalicy. According to the BBC the destructon up around $5B. Take care…John

Where i am here on the north side of Brisbane we are quite high. For us it was like nothing happened. There was a dam built to save the area where my sister lives and was completed late December. Lucky for her . We did prepare for anything tho, Moved all my trains to upstairs and tried as much as i could to keep my 2 siberian huskys out of the rain…they didnt see my side of the argument lol.Every one here seems to be bouncing back very quickly tho as the clean up is screaming along with over 150,000 ordinary people including myself voulenteering to help people we dont know and who are less fortunate clean up to try and bring some happyness to them after such a trying time. Our politicians here were comparing this to the effects of Katrina over there so it has been a major event here

Here is a pic of a train station. Not the platform height is the height of the floor of the passenger cars not rail height

I do hope and pray all will be back in order as soon as possible. Wife and I met a mother and daughter from Brisbane during a tour to Europe last May. I received an email from the daughter a couple of days before Brisbane got flooded and they were doing ok. Said they are in high ground. Haven’t heard any since then .

Everyone down under try to stay as dry as you can. Take care and best to all.

Well…at least the catenary is still in excellent shape!
