AHM 0-4-0 Dockside problem.

I have several of those old AHM Docksides. IMO those small engines with all the added working valve gears is a nice looking loco for small yard work. I have 2 of them that will run great in one direction and terrable in the other. I never seemed to get around yet to fixing them. I was running one on my 4 x 8 test track ( a round circle I use to test locos) at full throttle and it flew off at a curve and landed on the wood floor. Now it runs like the other 2. I took off the boiler off and saw that the motor came loose and it binds when going in another direction, causing the poor running. Can the motor be welded to the uprights that hold it from the front? Does anyone know of a place that might sell a quieter replacement motor?

I think the company that used to be known as AHM (Associated Hobby Manufacturers) is now IHC (International Hobby Corporation), and that these locomotives were actually made by Rivarossi. Contact IHC and see what they say about parts for these locomotives. Their web site is at http://www.ihc-hobby.com

If you want a new, quieter motor you might try looking through a Bowser or NWSL catalog. You will find a decent motor that is small enough to fit the space. While you are at it, you could purchase a new gearbox to go with the motor and turn a decent looking locomotive into a very steady and reliable performer.

Like you, I have a real weakness for those little docksides. My oldest is a Varney diecast model with several other makes sharing the shelf as well. I also have more cabooses than I can justify. We all have our weaknesses.

Steam just feels good.

Also contact Golf Manor Hobbies in Cincinnati. They seem to always have a lot of Rivarossi parts.
www.golfmanorhobbies.com But the new motor and gearbox from NWSL is good advice as well.
