AHM/Rivarrossi Heavyweight Coach

Does anybody know what prototype the AHM/Rivarrossi Heavyweight Coach is based on, if any?

Thanks, DREW

I think I read a long time ago it was based on Pennsy’s P-70 coach but you might want to verify that.

The AHM/Rivarossi heavyweight coach is based on a Southern coach.

It is the Bachmann heavyweight coach that is based on the Pennsy P-70.

VERY interesting potential for a train. Paint schemes or photos anyone?

Hi Drew,

Southern Ry. paint for heavyweight coaches was pretty basic, a very dark green similar to Pullman Green with black roof, trucks, and underbody. The lettering was gold, “SOUTHERN” spelled out on the letter board in an extended Roman font, and the car number displayed above the truck at each end of the lower side. Cars owned by subsidiary companies such as AGS, CNO&TP, NO&NE, and others, carried those initials in small letters at each end of the letter board.

Modernized heavyweight coaches still running in the 1960s were similar but with sans-serif or “gothic” lettering, and usually had a gold sill stripe running the length of the car.

A Southern Ry. local passenger train carrying a couple of heavyweight coaches is shown on page 69 of my book, The Model Railroader’s Guide to Passenger Equipment & Operation (Kalmbach Books, available on this Web site).

So long,

Andy
