air horn vs. air whistle

can someone explain the difference of these two?

was doin’ some surfin’ tonight, and found a soundbyte
page of some various locos, in one description it mentioned
’ air whistle’, have never heard the term before, but the
sample i listened to is something i have heard before !

ice station zero here in Iowa, sure seems to put
a different tone in the note of the locomotive traffic
tonight !!!

The air whistle is probably a Hancock 4700, found on NH FL9’s, EJ&E Baldwin center-cabs and perhaps a few other locomotives. The sound is similar to a steam whistle but did not seem to carry as well.

CSSHEGEWISCH,

Thanks for the info…
have active traffic on the mainline thru my town,
would be cool to hear something like those whistles
on these modern diesels…

i appreciate your time and knowledge !
