I want ot airbrush a set of handrails from a Kato SD40. The rails came unfinished, black delron plastic. I have attempted to paint them ones, but the paint peeled off while installing them. I used Polly scale paint, thinned in the correct proportions. Any suggestions on how I can avoid this problem. Are there any flexible paint additives that work with water-based, acrylic paints?

“Blacken It” is made by a company called A-West. You can find it listed in the Walther’s catalog (or online at Walther’s website), or your local hobby/train shop can order it for you. It’s made for blackening brass and other shiny metals. I’ve used it on several occasions; it really works.
I’ve heard of people using the paint used on R/C car bodies on handrails, this paint has to be flexable to absorb the knocks these cars take, I will admit I’ve never tried it but might be something to look into… I know one brand is Pactra and its available in spray, and bottles at most hobby stores that deal in R/C cars, boats, etc
also, Tamayia makes a special paint just for this kind of plastic
I’ve heard of a product called “Blacken It”, in fact I’m looking for it. It is mentioned in a few of the FSM kits I’ve just purchased but I have no idea where to find it. Maybe someone out there can let us both know.

Dave, I have never airbrushed handrails. I have
always hand painted them. After you paint them
you might want to spray dullcote over them. This
might help them not to flake off. There also
might be other fixatives that would help. Ross
