Any source of clean dry air, nitrogen or carbon dioxide is fine. In addition to, and more important than, the compressor, are the filter, regulator, water trap and oil trap - often two or more of these are combined in one unit. The bigger the tank, the better.
Pick a compressor that is fairly quiet. Home Depot, Wal-mart, Sears, Harbor Freight, etc are all okay.
Some of the best painter use a cylinder of clean dry nitrogen or carbon dioxide from a gas or welding supply place. With those, you only need the regulator.
I use a 1/8 HP medical compressor. Works great, although I really do need to spring for a moisture trap and pressure regulator someday…
If you have the space for a larger unit, you might watch Home Depot or Harbour Freight for deals on a 2 HP compressor/tank combination such as Campbell-Hausfeld’s. Those are often on sale up here for $CAD 99.
