I am new to Trains. I would like to find out about short lines in Alabama. Where do I need to go to find info? Does this web site provide anything like that? Thanks.

It’s called the Alabama Railfan. It should have what you’re looking for.

The “classic” reference is American Shortline Railway Guide, published by Kalmbach. This is a soft-bound book, in a small format that travels easily. I don’t have the most recent issue, but my 1991 copy lists about 20 short lines in Alabama.

Mr. West,
Alabama has 27 active railroads in all, 22 of which are shortlines or class 3 railroads. We have 4 class 1’s and 1 class 2 railroad. If you’d like more specific information then visit one of the links below.
Here is the link to the 2008 Alabama Rail Plan - http://tinyurl.com/djf9nd
Also here is a link to the 2008 Alabama Rail Directory, this document “profiles the twenty-seven railroads operating in the state of Alabama at the present time. These railroads comprise a 3,759-mile statewide system” - http://tinyurl.com/acm5lm
The above documents are PDF files which you can download and read on your computer or print out if you like. The website link for the documents is http://www.dot.state.al.us/Docs/Bureaus/Multi+Modal/Rail
Alabamarailfan.com is a website by my friend John D. Peterson, he’s got some great info and pics on his website. If you are interested in joining our Alabama Rails Yahoo discussion Group then please go to http://www.alrails.com and you’ll be forwarded to the yahoo group site.
If you need anything else please go to http://montgomeryrailroads.servemp3.com and you can contact me from my website.
