Can anyone tell me the differneces (if any) between the Alco S-1 and RS-1 locomotives? I am trying to model prototype for AC&Y.

The RS-1 is a stretched version of the S-1, with a short hood behind the cab.

Jake,
First of all, welcome to the forum! Good to have you aboard! [:)]
My understanding is that “RS” stands for “road switcher”. These were more powerful and had more HP than the smaller S-1s. The RS-1 switchers could either be used in a yard for yard switching, or on a mainline to haul rolling stock. At 660 HP, the S-1 was strictly a yard switcher.

The RS1 was actually a stretched S2, they shared the 1000 hp 539 engine. The S1 had a 660hp version. The S1 & S2 originally came with Blunt switcher trucks, the RS1 with AAR type B road trucks.
The limiting factor on switcher use on the road was lack of toilets and the low speed trucks. Road switchers had trucks equipped with suspension systems suitable for higher speed.
AC&Y did not have any S1 locomotives.

Here is an RS-1:
And an S2
Atlas has offered Alco S2, Alco RS1, F-M H1544 and H1644 models in HO, and some of them in N scale too.
Thansk to all for taking the time to show me the differences. I had seen those pictures at the Fallen Flags website but cannot honestly say that my eyes can see structural differences.
Glad to be aboard![8D]
