Hi
I am looking to see if any fan of the NYNHH has any idea if loco road switcher ALCO RS-3 was ever converted in a watercooled engine while still in the original delivery paint scheme ?
thanks very much for your appreciated reply

Stephano,
All Alco locomotives have a water cooled engine - It’s the turbocharger that came either air cooled or water cooled. The ‘easy’ way to tell is of the exhaust stack is ‘cross-wise’ on the long hood. This indicates a water cooled turbocharger. All of the RS-3 pictures I have reviewed on ‘rrpicturearchives’ show a water cooled installation. The air cooled units were so problematic that most railroads replaced them as they failed with the water cooled units. Another one of the Alco ‘issues’ that did not endear them to the customer base.

I have a photo of DERS-2c(rs3) from 1957, unit 540, in original paint with a switched over turbo stack. Actually three out four units are switched, one in a new paint job.
Hi Jim
Thanks for clarifing this for me i didnt understand that the change was exclusively for the turbocharger. Much appreciated
Hi M Horton
