I just picked up a junker Atlas RS1 for a redo project but there are no handrails with it. My LHS does not have replacements and I checked with Atlas on line and they are not listed. I looked at Kato thinking I might use RS2 and they are out of stock. Checked Walthers and the bay and came up with nothing. Does anyone out there have a suggestion on where I might find handrails?
Another option, if they’re available, might be to get handrails for the Atlas RS-3. While the RS-1 shown below did come with its original handrails, I use them as a pattern to bend new railings from .015" piano wire.
The railing portions were then cut from the stanchions, which were then drilled-out to accept the .015" piano wire.
The Delrin stanchions still allow some flex in the handrails, but the assemblies are much sturdier than the all-plastic handrails and they’re also closer to scale size.
Thanks for the replies, RS3 handrails seem to be out of stock too. I looked at the Smokey Valley website but there doesn’t seem to be any way to order whats listed, only the page listing the item shows and nothing else. Tried clicking on the email and nothing happens are they still in business? If worse come to worse I may try making my own handrails out of wire.
When I click on the mail link, windows mail opens for me. The page says it was worked on this month, so that’s a whole lot better than the web pages that have the model of the month from back in 2007. Cut and paste the email addy to your email program.
I got some Smoky Valley handrails about 18 mos ago from him. Had to do a rebend to properly fit over the RS3 battery boxes, and other than that they are very nice.
Another option might be to try Utah Pacific https://www.tomarindustries.com/up.htm Look at part #HS-87 handrail stanchions.($13.45) While it’s not the entire assembly and says that it fits most GE diesels, it could probably be adapted to an ALCO RS1. (That is if the stanchions are gone too). If nothing else is available this might be the best option.
