All about locomotive air horns

For those of you who are interested, I have posted a new section on my site about locomotive air horns written by one of my members. It’s a pretty comprehensive article covering the P3 up to now, You can even listen to the different horn styles.

Check it out if you would like:

Nice website, and it looks very professional.

However, if I may offer some advice, why not mention the air whistles of the diesel era in your “History” section? The New Haven was a big user of the Hancock #4700 Air Whistle, using it on FL9’s, GP9’s, SW1200’s, Mack FCD’s, EP-5’s, MU’s, H16-44’s, and RS-11’s (totally over 200 units combined). Also, the NH did use brass air whistles (probably from retired steam engines) on HH600’s, HH660’s, S-1’s, S-2’s, and others.

Some of these lasted well into the 1970’s until, IIRC, a more stringent FRA policy on how loud and at what distance made them obsolete. Just a thought.

If you need a recording of a Hancock #4700, I can get one for you as my club owns such a whistle. Heck, here’s website for one with sound clips:

Very Nice. I enjoyed the K5LA the best. (then again, who wouldn’t?[;)])

Thanks for the insight and input, however the person who wrote that is a air horn guy, I made a similar suggestion to him a while back and he looked at me like I just shot him in the foot, so I left it alone.

However, if you’d like to write an article and submit the sound files to me I’d concider adding it to the site as well.

I must add very nice I really enjoyed the all the different horns, very cool bookmarked your site for future refrence thanks terry.

Thanks!
