well someone had to do it. and i took the hit for the team. discuss America’s oldest railroad here. what always has made me wonder is how the blazes UP has managed to stay in operation for over 100 years. how come THEY never got bought out?
oh right. insterad of being bought out, they bought other railroads out instead. mut have gotten the money from being the first to span track all the way across the USA. but… THEY DIDNT REACH HAWAII YET! and never will. but i wouldnt be surprised if they tried. probably some kind of ferry system. yikes…
where will UP be in 10 years? ruler of all railroads and now named the U.P. Empire?
Not trying to spread rumors here, and most here have heard this one - but I was told by a UP conductor about 5 months ago that UP and CSX might be putting something together.
what else matters to a railfan? all i want is to see colorful consists again, not rmour yellow locomotives with a slight grey on their roofs.
one thing i’ll grant UP is their fondness for running monster sized trains. not easy to catch if you live in the wrong place, but if you do, it’s gonna be a nice sight. and the winged emblems look nice too. gives the SD70Ms an interesting look.
armour yellow looked good, but not on every last train in the whole state of Wisconsin. and isnt UP short of some of the equipment other railroads have an abundancy of? i think they dont even care that they are. maybe if they didnt buy all those SD70Ms…
No, that’s not why. Railroads share locomotives, it’s called pool power. WHY DOESN’T ANYONE UNDERSTAND THAT!!! If you see a UP locomotive in NY, or a CSX locomotive in California, it DOES NOT MEAN THE TWO RAILROADS ARE GOING TO MERGE. The UP unit could’ve run through on a UP train delivered to CSX, or vice versa. There ougtta be sticky topic explaining that…
Don’t pay any attention to Lord Atmo, guys. He’s just one of those railfans who wants RR’s to do this and RR’s to do that, but never puts in any serious thought and never looks at it from the non-railfan point of view. A.K.A, he resists change!
4884bigboy. I post that because they don’t answer the dector CSX UP engine#####, but they do answer as plain UP not CSX UP engine####. I do understand what power pool or engine pool is. Now i know were you were coming from that was my fault.
resist change? tch. hardly. if the government broke up these class 1s, i would throw a party. oh that’s change, isnt it. if you like what railroads are becoming, you must enjoy being bored. first it will all be the same locomotive type. in the same colors. then it will all be intermodals and the occasional coal train. manifests wont last forever. if change like this continues, railroads will necome less and less interesting as the variety will be removed completely! non-railfan POV? why do you think i never say to get rid of widecabs and bring back spartan cabs? because i KNOW it will decrease crew safety as a result. how stupid do you people think i am?
do i resist change? no. why do i protest UP? because i like VARIETY! some blue locomotives, red ones, green ones, yellow ones that arent everywhere. where you could go a certain distance from one railroad to another and see a different locomotive color.
now railroads exist to move goods. and only that. but UP had no need to buy out CNW. they had enough track and enough customers to remain strong and competitive. as did CNW. but they still buy them out. ridiculous
i miss CNW dearly. UP dared buy them out. that’s why
and if this keeps up, the topic will be shut down. so if anyone else cares to refute me or wants more answers etc, PM me. but i have derailed this topic enough already. also please note that i edited my first post and made it more neutral
back to UP. numerous sites say it’s America’s largest railroad. but i have also been told BNSF was. which source is right…?
This is completely feeling like Deja Vu all over again, so I don’t know why I’m even bothering with this but…
I can give you one very good reason why the UP should have and did buy a controlling interest in the CNW. Ever see how they would have had to get to Chicago if they didn’t have the ability to use the CNW? Let’s just say it wasn’t exactly a straight shot.
BTW, without UP’s dough, CNW would’ve never made it to the PRB, and I think you would’ve seen them disappear a lot sooner than they did.
Oh yeah…one other thing. Love the new Signature image. It’s so good that you’re celebrating wrecks now just so you can bad mouth the UP some more. I’m sure all the UP workers here are grateul for your support of their safety.
Lord Atmo, Mr Atmo, or whatever your name is, Armor Yellow and Grey is NOT on every train in the state of Wisconsin, and the only train with UP SD70Ms on it is the roadrailer, most of the rest have a variety of power. Trust me, I live and railfan here. If you ever tried railfanning anywhere but your own back yard, you’d find lots of variety. Try going about 60 Miles south of Eau Claire, you’ll hit the CP main line to the Twin Cities and Chicago. Go about 35 miles south west of where you live, and you’ll hit the BNSF between the same two cites. You can see almost any class one in the country represented on that line if you sit there long enough, not only BNSF but CN, UP, CSX, NS, etc in run through power. Go about 40 miles east of Eau Claire and you’ll hit the CN main line to Duluth/superior area. Go less than five or ten miles North of Eau Claire and you’ll find the Wisconsin Northern, a shortline railroad that runs on old SOO and CNW trackage. Go down towards Madison and Milwaukee and you’ll find the state’s biggest regional railroad since the WC dissappeard (unfortunately), the Wisconsin and Southern. The UP actually owns a very small percentage of the trackage in Wisconsin, and has a very minimal presence in the state compared to most of the other railroads… You can see a lot of things, you just have to railfan outside Eau Claire.
Besides, if I were you I’d be counting my blessings that I live next to at least a mainline that sees 3-4 trains a day, and many days a little more than that. Trust me, I’ve railfanned the line you live on that is how many trains a day it gets, not just the roadrailer you always see. I live at the end of branchline, and I’m lucky if this end of the line sees 3 trains a week.
Contrary to what you seem to believe, the UP is not taking over every line in the state. All you have to do is travel a little ways to see a little variety. Besides, remember the CNW bought up quite a few railroads too back when they
