Alleghenny Midland

Howdy! Does anyone have a photocopy of the AM trackplan or map of where the railroad supposedly ran? I’m trying to find what location is probable for a AM/V&AL interchange. I have a copy of several MR issues, but my MR’s are packed away in 4 seperate boxes right now.

The V&AL consists of the PRR, VGN, and a freelance regional coal-hauler.

A good while back, a proposal was made to merge the V&AL and AM (to form the V&ALM: Virginia and Alleghenny Midland)

The Merger fell through, but the new paint scheme was adopted by the V&AL due to it’s higher visability. The V&AL and the AM remain working partners to this day.

Older issues of MR probably will help, they recently did a recap in the classic Model Railroads series but don’t think it was very detailed. I have an issue from several years ago with a map but couldn’t tell you which one off hand. It should be easy enough to find out though.

To the best of my knowledge I don’t remember Mr K ever actually publishing any kind of a map laying out just how his Allegheny Midland got into the eastern reaches of West Virginia; he did say in one article that he had acquired some topographical maps and layed out a practical route so he could interchange with the V&O. That is as far as I remember him ever actually going.

The trackplan was well published but, like you, my mags are currently in boxed storage.

Ha! Aren’t you the lucky one. I have that plus Lionel Strang’s Allegheny and Lackawanna Southern issues sitting right next to me on the radiator, and I’m not even at my own house!!! haha.

February 1997. The trackplan should be in MR’s database… hang on lemme open this thing. Okay, just as I thought: theres a map showing the route it travelled. I’ll do my best here w/o being able to show you.

THeres two maps: an overall bigger view and then one more detailed. The overall one shows the AM and V&O. The AM ran from Dillonvale Ohio to merge with a direct southern route connecting Connellsville, PA through Midland/South Fork W. VA and connecting to Sunrise, VA. Sunrise is just across the state line from W. VA.

The detailed portion shows the line from Midland down to the connection with the V&O. The AM seems to go from Midland/South Fork on the Cheat River down to Parsons, then across Cheat River to Hendricks. From there it goes south to Big Springs Junction, South to Glady, South to North Durbin, south to Durbin, south to Altapass right on the state line, across into VA east to Lime Springs, South to Gap Run, south to Slate Falls, then South to Sunrise.

Just south of Sunrise is Kingswood Junction, where the V&O interchange lies. However, the AM also runs West to Mountain Grove, and then south to Kingswood Junction to form a little triangle.

hope this helps

Lucky indeed ! As a matter of fact, I have that issue right next to my recliner along with quite a few others. It’s featured in the 2/97 Model Railroader. Hopefully this will help ya ! There is also a layout diagram, but I think this is what you’re looking for.

This has always been one of my favorite layouts & I suppose it’s also where I got my inspiration for my Allegheny & Cumberland.

Thanks! that helps tremendously. I just won a MP-15 on ebay that will become a AM switcher. I gotta sit down with my maps and then email Tony for some decals.
