Allerton, Iowa, depot

Does anyone know what the UP (or whoever) did with the Rock Island depot in Allerton, Iowa? I hope it’s still intact somewhere, but I fear the opposite.

Very Old, Old Timer

[#welcome], Patrick! Wish I could help with your question, but I’ve never been down in that part of the state. I’m sure someone here is familiar with that area, though- Jeff Hergert? Yoo-hoo, Jeff!

Sadly, the Allerton depot is gone. I believe the C&NW tore it down sometime in the 1980s. I knew the last (I think) RI agent at Allerton. Met him when he worked Marengo, Iowa. My dad and I visited him at Allerton in the summer of 1978. I believe the RI kept it open until the end. I don’t know if the C&NW ever used it as a train order office. I have a 1981 CNW employee timetable and it doesn’t show Allerton as an open office.
Brian, I think I’m about to be bumped out of the West pool. If it happens, I’ll go East. Watch for the Kromer. See you out there, maybe.
Jeff

I’ll keep my eyes peeled (that is, if I ever get back out to the tracks[:(])![:)]

EDIT: Hey, how far would you typically run if you go east? Clinton? Chicago?

The East pool runs to Clinton, and I am now going east for awhile. There was a proposal to establish pools out of Rochelle to run to Mo Valley, Boone, Des Moines, or Mason City. Originally, Rochelle was to be the home terminal for all. Later the Rochelle to Boone pool proposal was changed to make Boone the home terminal. There has been no serious talk of these pools for quite awhile. I don’t think the proposals have been withdrawed, but with the Clinton-Mo Valley long pool itself having trouble making it without being recrewed I think it’s all on the back burner, way back.
Jeff

Sad deal about Allerton. You guys going to cut out CLinton or what? We heard that you guys were moving out and letting ADM have the yard there ( that was from some ICE guys but who knows right)

Hey Jeff, check your e-mail!

Brian, nothing there. I sent one to you. (In case it doesn’t go thru.)
