Alternative to Dullcote?

Hi Guys

I was wondering if anybody has come across anything that can compare to testors dullcote? Dont get me wrong I love it but I dont love the price as around here its almost $9 a can. I have seen some people say the krylon flat and matte finishes but I have heard they leave a bit of shine. Any help would be great

Have you tried Valspar Clear Flat?

No I havent, have you Jeff? What are the results like?

An Airbrush and some bottled Dullcote is cheaper in the long run…

Similar to Krylon Matte Finish but without the shine. If you want to remove it use a good stripper. It almost takes an act of congress to get it off.

Wal Mart sells some plastic compatible spray cans.

They have a matte clear finish.

Been using that for years.

Wal-mart sells Plaid Clear Acrylic Sealer in the crafts section, which is what I use in place of Dullcote.

Thanks for the tips fells

Cacole : It wont leave a shine on models?

There may be different formulas – I use the Matte finish version and it seems to be just as good as Dullcote.

Model Masters clear flat, better than dull coat.

Do you need to thin it, or do you just stir it and shoot it?

I use lacquer thinner to thin both Dullcote and Glosscote - 25-50% thinner, depending on its intended use. You can also mix Dullcote and Glosscote to get Semiglosscote - vary the proportions to make it shinier or duller.

Is it shinier if you dilute it with the higher percentage. For all out dull like the surface you get if you spray it right out of the rattle can, do you dilute it with the lower percentage.

I don’t notice any difference in the dullness regardless of the amount of thinner. Varying it seems to affect only the thickness of the dried application, although I suppose if there’s a lot less actual Dullcote in the mix that the finish might be less-dull. I usually use the higher percentage of thinner only when spraying dry transfers which have been applied to clear decal paper. This helps to seal the surface before the decal is placed in water. After application to the car or locomotive, it will, of course, get a further coat.

The re-weigh data on this modified Athearn boxcar is dry transfer lettering applied to clear decal paper. After spraying with, in this case, thinned semi-glosscote, it was applied over a “patch” of clear decal paper which had first been airbrushed with a boxcar red colour, then applied to the car. I Dullcote rolling stock only after the initial lettering has been applied, so this “re-painted” area won’t be Dullcoted, although it will receive some additional light weathering.

Micro Scale makes a gloss, flat and satin finish. I have used the flat & gloss with good results. The flat dries dead flat. I personally don’t like the dead flat look so I mixed the gloss & flat and got results similar to Floquil flat. I have not tried their satin finish but assume it is comparable to my 1/2 & 1/2 mix. My favorite flat finish is Floquil. I don’t know if they still make it or not since Testors bought them out. I have enough to last this lifetime so I’m not worried. Roger Huber

I’ve been airbrushing Future straight from the bottle for the initial clear coat for decals followed by a mix of Future & Tamiya Acrylic Flat Base (about 10-15%) for a flat coat without any problem for years now.
