The Alton Regional Multi-Modal Transportation Center could have incorporated Alton Station into the complex during construction
Even small cities like Alton and some theme parks have bigger train stations than the one in Houston (pop.: 2,200,000). Amtrak made a big mistake moving out of Houston Union Station to a concrete shanty.
Sorry Alton. Not a very big nor nice looking station.
I am sure the new one will be better. Like Bloomington-Normal’s new station. (Which is the best new AMTRAK station I have ever seen.)
Why aren’t they going to use the present station. I’m sure whatever’s wrong with the place could be remedied.
Couldn’t agree more, Paul. It’s a pity that the METRO idea to build a multi-modal park & ride at the UP right-of-way just north of UH downtown fell through (granted, due to METRO rather interesting actions) - it would’ve been interesting to see how that turned out.
My family lived in Alton in the late 40’s and as a grade school student, I loved going to this station to see the Abraham Lincoln and Ann Rutledge streamliners.
