You may want to take note that the link doesn’t make any mention of the K4 being there.

The Railfest in of itself is worth a trip to me…the K4 story I posted in Classic Trains…if the two coincide ( which I hope they do ) it would be great…"The K4 is completed and going back to Altoona.this summer…that is why I mentioned it. Heres the link to the K4 story. Sorry about that…

http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/news/cityregion/s_498006.html “It is expected the locomotive will return for the museum’s Railfest, July 7-9, or a week or two after the popular event…”

I really don’t like to rain on anyone’s parade, but don’t expect the 1361 to be in Altoona anytime in July this year. I’d go so far to say it being there “this summer” isn’t going to happen, either. One other statement of “going to Scranton to see them put the wheels back under it this month,” well, it IS the 24th, only one week left.

I was just up there today (grinding staybolts on top of the firebox in preparation for peening them over) and:

The sheets on the inside of the firebox are still not installed (both sides and backhead). The angle pieces on the sides that comes straight up from the throat sheet are installed and the welding on them is almost done.

There’s a crapload of staybolts that need to be drilled, tapped and installed, then ground and peened once those sheets are installed. That doesn’t even mention the rivet work at the mud ring that will need to be done.

All the boiler tubes (flues) need to be installed, the tube sheets are in place and appear to be ready.

The last time I talked to Mike, the plan was to put the drivers in place before the hydro test on the boiler. I guess they don’t trust the shop trucks to support all that water weight. (Wasn’t there an earlier article that said this hydro test was to be done in February?)
