Am I Actually Seeing Things Here or Is It My Imagination

http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=316057& Not my picture, but I thought I thought they were all patched by now. All I know is the picture was taken on March 2nd, 2010. Because of this I have one question to ask. Why are these two units unpatched, and how are they unpatched, because I thought CNW Merged with the UP in 1995 making this unit - http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=314680&nseq=2

WOW. Nice catch![:)] (Evan though it’s not your photo.) It says that these are the only 2 left on the UP system. I bet they are real.

Good to see an old C&NW –9 again.

Thanks

Justin

No, you’re not seeing things and it’s not your imagination (the two phrases mean the same thing by the way). I believe per the CNW Hist. Soc. there were still three CNW units unpatched on the UP, but that could be down to two now. It usually takes a while after a merger or acquisition for a railroad to repaint all the units it inherited.

The latter pic in the post is of a unit that was repainted into a fictional one-off “CNW” paint scheme as part of a series of repaints done by UP to commemorate the various railroads that went into making the current UP.

C&NW 8646 and 8701 are the last unrenumbered C&NW locomotives in service. They are apparently based out of Proviso and seem to work a lot of short-haul jobs. I would suspect that UP is not in any hurry to renumber or repaint either of these locomotives.

Actually, Paul, they “live” in West Chicago, making the daily run to and from Proviso at night. I have no idea what they do out there during the day, if anything.

It looks to me like some effort has been made to maintain them in their original paint, with slight modifications. The reflectorized striping, which appears to be yellow in these shots, was green when original.

For those who haven’t looked at the photograph, it’s an absolutely stunning shot!

First, what an awsome photo. Two CNW painted engines next to a manned tower - in 2010. I also want to point out that the train in the picture, UP LPJ02, usually goes to Proviso @3-4 in the morning. There’s no actual time listed for when the photo was taken but I have a feeling it was late (or very early depending on your point of view).

The two CNW units have also worked ABEBE - Belvidere auto turn to Proviso.
